Head of Strategic Engagement
Nick is GSDM’s Head of Strategic Engagement. In this role, he works closely with the Director in implementing the Company’s strategy and vision, including through external engagement with clients and partners.
Following a full career in the Army, and with extensive experience of working at the governmental and intergovernmental levels, Nick brings with him a wealth of experience. This includes on strategic assessment, defence relations, disaster management response, conflict prevention, peacekeeping, campaign assessment, investigations, business development, training and mentoring.
Nick’s service in the British Army, especially latterly, involved working in the international arena. He was seconded to the UK Foreign Office in New York, was an Acting Defence Attaché in Rwanda, Serbia, Nigeria and Albania, a NATO liaison officer to HQ US Central Command (CENTCOM) and worked in the UK Ministry of Defence alongside the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, Department for International Development, and the Cabinet Office.
As a soldier, following a conventional regimental career, he moved to the international sphere concentrating on strategic issues and defence relations. One appointment saw him deployed, often at short notice, to provide the UK Ministry of Defence with on the spot assessments of potential flashpoints. Subsequently, he was the British Army’s representative in a multinational army interoperability programme based in Washington, DC. His following appointment saw him oversee UK Defence relations with South Asian partners, travelling often to the region. He was then seconded to the UK Mission to the UN (UKMIS), in New York. This appointment saw him work with the UN HQ on Peacekeeping, Peacebuilding and Security Sector Reform issues. He travelled to assess situations on the ground where UN Peacekeepers were deployed.
During this appointment he was responsible for engaging with the UN on civilian / formed police units and Rule of Law issues, including corrections.
His last international position saw him work in a NATO HQ on a strategic assessment of International Security Assistance Force’s contribution to Afghanistan security. From this post he deployed to Florida as NATO’s liaison officer to HQ US CENTCOM, covering issues such as Afghanistan and Counter Piracy operations and the emerging Arab Spring movements. His final military appointment saw him involved in the Army HQ’s Personnel Directorate looking at policy issues, boards of inquiries, complaints, discipline and lessons learned.
Nick’s interests include travelling, sports (now watching), the countryside and walking.
